Interactivity Check

Place your own content on the model

Answer four statements about one piece of content you already own. This page then says where that content sits on the Interactivity Maturity Model. It also says what the next level would take. Bring one real module, chapter or video, not the whole course.

Four statements about one piece of your content

How the placement is madeThe four statements are the four gates between the five levels. You answer them in order. Your content sits at the lowest gate it fails. That holds even when a later statement is true. So an experience that adapts, but asks nothing of the learner, is still level 2. Answer for one real module, chapter or video.

Tick every statement that is true of the piece of content you have in mind

Placement

1Consumption

Information is delivered. The learner observes.

As described, your content is delivered and observed. It may be excellent content. Nothing in it is asked of the learner, so nothing about the learner comes back out of it.

To reach level 2, Participation

Give the learner something to do inside the material: an exercise, an activity, a question that has to be answered before the page moves on. At level 2 that is enough, and every learner will still finish holding the same thing.

The five levels, in full

The model names five levels. A team can then say where an experience sits today, and where it should sit next. Helix rests on one claim. The future of learning is interactivity, not more content.

  1. 1Consumption

Information is delivered. The learner observes.

  2. 2Participation

The learner engages through exercises and activities.

  3. 3Enrichment

Practice, feedback and consequence are layered onto content.

  4. 4Decision-Making

The learner shapes outcomes through choices.

  5. 5Adaptive Intelligence

The environment adapts to each learner in real time.

Which module lifts which level

No single module carries the whole model. Interactives does the lifting in the middle, where most content is stuck.

  • ParticipationHelix Labs and Helix StudioThe learner is given exercises and a place to do them.
  • EnrichmentHelix Labs and Helix InteractivesPractice, feedback and consequence are added to content the learner already has.
  • Decision-MakingHelix Interactives and Helix AssessConsequence design plus judgment-based assessment ask the learner to choose and then to answer for the choice.

What the placement is for

A placement starts one conversation. What would it take to write the wrong outcome for your material? What would that change for the learner who meets it? Helix Interactives is the module built for that step.
